The Air Jordan 5, designed by Tinker Hatfield, was the fifth model of the Air Jordan line. Released in 1990, these luxury basketball shoes’ main design inspiration was the aggressive look of the iconic World War II fighter planes painted to look like a shark – hence the shark-tooth shapes on the midsole.
The Air Jordan V was released in four colorways. Of the four original colorways, only the Fire Red was released with MJ’s number on the heel. Nowadays, almost each Air Jordan 5 Retro is embellished with the 23 at the heel. Design-wise, the shoe has many elements from its predecessors, including breathable panels on the sides, an asymmetrical collar, and a visible Air Unit in the midsole. It also has many firsts, given that it was the first basketball sneaker in the industry with a clear outsole, a reflective tongue, and a lace lock. The reflective 3M material was to bring attention to the sneaker as photographers popped their flashbulbs, which occurred every time MJ made a move. Only two of the original colorways had the reflective tongue. Over the years, several colorways have been released. Other than the OGs, the other iterations to stand the test of time include the Raging Bull Red, Green Bean, Alternate Bel-Air, and Off-White Muslin.
The Air Jordan 5 is a unique and stylish sneaker. They’re extremely soft inside, easy to find the right foot sizing, and durable. Additionally, their soles deliver exceptional underfoot grip, making them perfect for all sorts of on-court games.
